For context, my first dates are usually drinks dates, and I’m a pretty casual person in terms of dress generally. It lets you mix in bold colors without it being totally overwhelming like a solid red blazer. While I love this blog so much, I have to say that Sally’s post about wearing black with intention is the single greatest piece of fashion advice I have ever read on the internet.
There are lots of black, white, and neutral colors. Where the majority of the outfit is black, I’ve tried to break up the color with different textures or details. I bought one made from fine merino wool. Being a thin sweater means it has more potential as a layering piece as I won’t get too warm. Its simplicity means it fits the minimalist vibe I was going for perfectly. It also means it dresses up really nicely and I feel comfortable wearing it with shirts, blazers, and trousers.

I don’t like the look of a bright red blazer with black though – I feel like the colour contrast is a little too jarring. In this outfit I paired a black sweater with beige chinos and black boots. I went for a checkered shirt underneath as the neutral colors compliment the pants well. I kept the outfit casual by rolling up the hems of the pants to really show off the boots. If the skirt were straighter, I think it would juuuust be OK with black tights, but in that case I would go more covered up top. And I write this as someone who is quite tall and can’t buy any of the dresses featured here, but that isn’t because they are “too short”.
